Prayers Are Not Enough

I’m so completely disturbed by the horrible shooting in Newtown, CT. I try to scroll quickly past the crazies on Facebook that are using what should be this time of mourning for our nation to spew their gun advocacy positions. Now is not the time.

While I appreciate the need to pray for these families that have had their babies stolen from them, PRAYER IS NOT ENOUGH.

It’s just not.

I don’t know what the answer is, but I do know steps we can take as human beings to make things a bit better.

You know that kid in school no one ever talks to?
Someone ask him how he’s doing today.

You know that mom you avoid at the playground because her kid clearly has behavior issues?
See if she needs someone to talk to.

As a society we are so guarded and so stand-offish. I’m guilty of it too.

Matt and I were talking this weekend and he pointed out that our small Bank of America neighborhood branch has not one, but 2 armed security guards patrolling at all times.

So we can protect our money but not our precious children and the people who work for peanuts to teach them and protect them throughout the day?

Columbine happened one month before I graduated high school. Never did I ever think that anything like that would happen in my school. This is the problem with America. We always think it won’t happen to us. “Not in my backyard” we say.

Well it will. The shooting in Newtown didn’t happen in an inner city school in a high crime area of a major city. Armed thugs with criminal records didn’t storm the school. It happened in what could’ve been Any School, Any Town, USA.

Our president choked back tears as he mourned the loss those precious people. He went to the town and called those children by name. The first responders saw things that no one should ever have to see.

I find myself complaining about pregnancy. It can be pretty uncomfortable most days. But I have my baby. There are parents that would give anything to have theirs back.

I will pray for everyone affected in this terrible tragedy. But I will also hope that change is coming and that our lawmakers will take the necessary steps to stop this from happening again.

God bless all the families of the lost this Christmas season. I can’t even imagine how they feel.
